Trip-related background
  • Previous visits to Japan:
    • None

    • Conversation: Nil; only what Steve and Kitty are able to teach me between now and October
    • Reading and writing: None

  • Other Connections with Japan
    • I remember my parents traveling to Japan about 40 years ago and talking about how much they enjoyed their trip. WE still have pictures of them in Kyoto.

What I hope to get from this adventure:
  • I would like to learn more about Japan and the Japanese people; get a sense of the life of cities and the countryside, learn about the culture, enjoy good cuisine.

Things about me I'd like to share (work, family, personal history, hobbies, interests):
  • Work
    • I was originally a lawyer, but I subsequently picked up a PhD in political science. For most of the past 40 years have been doing a mix of research, teaching, and consulting, focusing on problems and issues in the administration of justice For example, court delay, fairness in justice system processes)--mostly in the U.S. but to some extent internationally.

  • Family
    • Anne and I have been married for 45 years and we have two adult children, Katie and Michael. Katie and her family, including our two grandkids Maya [age 7) and Sofia (age 4) live in Rossland, British Columbia. Mike and his wife Heather live in Denver. Mike is a student in a PhD program in psychology at the University of Northern Colorado. Heather teaches international relations courses at the University College of the University of Denver and runs an aerial dance studio in Denver. Both families have lived abroad for a number of years. Kate and her husband Mike were in Bosnia and Kosovo for about eight years, while Mike and Heather were in Egypt for three years and Macedonia for a year.

  • Interests
    • I am "semi-retired" (though Anne would delete the "semi") and this year my work is focusing particularly on juvenile justice issues. Outside of work, I enjoy non-business travel and am interested in politics and sports.
